A frozen lake, snow as far as you can see and fun times sledging down the mountain. A winter weekend in St. Moritz has much to offer and it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. In search for some snow and a fun weekend, I went to St. Moritz with a group of friends.
Accomodation
We stayed in the youth hostel in St. Moritz Bad. Right next to the lake and near the forest. It’s got everything you need and is really modern. We went with a family room which meant, we had 4 beds (a double and a bunk bed) and a privat bathroom. But you can also choose to sleep in a dormitory with shared bathrooms. Our room had everything we needed, was clean and the beds were comfy. You can reach it by bus but we arrived by car as we knew we wanted to go sledging the next day in a different location. We booked our room with breakfast and opted for a take-a-way pizza for the night. The hostel also offers entertainment like billiard and table football during the stay or you can as we did play cards in your room or lobby.
A walk on the lake of St. Moritz

Just a few steps away from the hostel, the lake of St. Moritz awaits you in all its frozen glory. We arrived in the afternoon, so our walk ended with a beautiful sunset. To walk around the whole lake, it takes about an hour. We opted to walk some of the lake and then take a stroll uphill to another lake, Lej da Staz. It’s also known for its Instagram worthy view from the jetty. Just search on Instagram and you can see what I mean.
We managed to catch the last sunrays before heading back to the hostel. Just walking on the frozen lake is an adventure for itself but catching some good weather makes it even better. During the winter moths the lake also offers a lot of activities and events like the White Turf, snow polo and ice skating.
Sledging in Muottas Muragl
Snow, speed, tight curves and 4.2 km of fun. The toboggan run from Muottas Muragl is definitely for anyone who loves a little bit of speed, risk and long runs. Before you can sledge down you have to get up the mountain but do not worry, you get up via a cableway and you can lend a sledge at the cableway station. Pro tip: make sure you get a seat in the front or in the back to enjoy the great view whilst the cable takes you up the mountain. On the top awaits you the start of the run and you have a restaurant, plus you can walk/ hike up even further if you want to enjoy some amazing views over the valley. We went down the mountain twice before taking a break for some food and drinks and for taking in the views. Then we hit the run again. It was a lot of fun. You gather quite some speed so be sure to wear a helmet and be carful on those tight turns but other than that just go for it and even have a little competition who’s gonna be first.
A weekend in St. Moritz
St. Moritz has a lot to offer. A walk on the lake and sledging is just two of those. There’s so much more, like skiing, shopping, exploring the scenery and its sites or the various activities on the frozen lake itself.
We were lucky to catch some beautiful weather and great snow conditions, which made our trip even more special. Whatever you fancy for a fun winter weekend, St. Moritz has it.
